The Albrecht von Goertz designed BMW 503 debuted at the 1955 Frankfort Motor Show along with it's sibling, the 507.  With bodies by Bertone and an alloy V8 engine, the 503 was expensive to build.  Production started late in 1956 and when it ceased in 1959, BMW had only built 412 cars of which 129 were cabriolets.

Chassis 69146 was completed on May 21, 1957 and then sent to well-known German dealer, Glockler (of racing Porsche fame).  Little is known about the early history of this 503, but in the late 1990s it was in the hands of the Blackhawk Collection (Danville, CA).  Blackhawk sold it to noted collector Robert Pond (Palm Springs, CA).  During Mr. Pond’s ownership, the very original 503 was treated to a comprehensive cosmetic restoration that included a bare-metal repaint, a complete re-trimming of the interior, fresh chrome plating and complete detail of the chassis and suspension.  In addition to the cosmetic work performed, all mechanical systems were serviced and inspected.  In 2007, 69146 was sold to Michael Schudroff  (Greenwich, CT) via RM Auctions.  In 2009, Indigo Classic Cars acquired 69146 with the intention of using the handsome and sporty car in one of the many rallies for which it is eligible.  After some driving and a full inspection it was determined that 69146 was not mechanically fit for long distance touring.

In April 2010, this 503 was sent to noted BMW V8 specialists, Tillson Motorcars (Philadelphia, PA) for a complete engine rebuild.  The work has commenced and is schedule for completion this summer.  Once completed the performance of this car will match the stunning cosmetics.
